We would like to express our sincere gratitude to director Oscar for taking the time to answer our questions.
Whole team of Liverpool Indie Awards is wishing you the very best in all your future projects. We hope to see more of your exceptional work in the years to come. Thank you once again!
Can you tell us about your submitted project and what inspired you to create it?
"Who is God?" is a short film born out of our desire to explore and explain profound questions about existence and creation through a unique medium. The inspiration came from our fascination with humanity's creative spirit and our continuous quest for understanding. This project is particularly special to us as it is one of the first short films created with the help of artificial intelligence. It was conceived as a love letter to humanity, and we wanted to use AI to explain this concept, as the plot itself delves into these themes.
What was your creative vision for this project, and how did you work to bring that vision to life?
Our creative vision for "Who is God?" was to create a thought-provoking and visually stunning exploration of humanity's quest for meaning and connection. We aimed to blend traditional storytelling with the innovative capabilities of artificial intelligence to bring a fresh perspective to these timeless questions. Bringing this vision to life was a collaborative effort. Our talented team worked tirelessly, combining their diverse skills and expertise to overcome the challenges and harness the potential of AI in filmmaking. Their dedication and creativity were instrumental in realizing this project, and I am incredibly grateful for their contributions. This film is a testament to what can be achieved when a passionate and skilled team comes together with a shared vision.
How did you collaborate with the rest of your team, such as producers, writers, and cinematographers, to ensure the project's success?
Collaboration was key to the success of "Who is God?". Our team, though small, worked seamlessly to ensure every aspect of the project was executed with precision and creativity. We leveraged the power of artificial intelligence to create in record time, enhancing our production processes. Our prompt engineer played a crucial role in fine-tuning the AI's contributions, while our music editor carefully selected the rhythms and music that perfectly complemented the film's atmosphere. As the director, I worked closely with our executive producer to oversee the project's development and ensure our vision was realized. The synergy among us and the innovative capabilities of AI were pivotal in bringing this unique project to life.
What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during the production, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges we faced during the production of "Who is God?" was working within a limited budget. Balancing the financial constraints with our ambitious vision required careful planning and resourcefulness. We overcame this by leveraging the efficiency and capabilities of artificial intelligence, which allowed us to produce high-quality content without the need for extensive resources. Additionally, our small but dedicated team played a crucial role in overcoming these challenges. Each member took on multiple roles and responsibilities, ensuring that every aspect of the project was handled with care and creativity. Through our collective effort and the innovative use of AI, we were able to bring our vision to life despite the financial limitations.
Can you discuss any specific moments or scenes in the project that you are particularly proud of, and why?
One of the moments in "Who is God?" that I'm particularly proud of is the final scene. It encapsulates the essence of our entire project, reflecting the theme of creation coming full circle and returning in the image and likeness of its creator. This scene brings together the visual and thematic elements we aimed to explore, highlighting the profound connection between humanity and the creations we bring to life, whether of flesh or silicon. It's a powerful conclusion that resonates with the core message of our film, leaving a lasting impact and encouraging viewers to ponder the deeper meanings behind existence and creativity.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently, and what lessons did you learn from this experience?
Looking back, I don't regret anything about the creation of "Who is God?". Every challenge and decision along the way contributed to the final outcome, and I'm grateful for the experience. I've learned so much from this journey, especially the importance of collaboration and the incredible potential of integrating AI into the creative process. This project has been a valuable learning experience, and I'm excited to carry these lessons forward into future endeavors.
Can you describe a project that you are particularly proud of and why it stands out to you?
One project I am particularly proud of is "Who is God?". It stands out to me because it represents a unique blend of traditional filmmaking and cutting-edge artificial intelligence. This project pushed the boundaries of what we could achieve creatively and technically, and it was a true collaborative effort. The themes we explored and the innovative methods we used to bring our vision to life make it a significant milestone in my career. It was a deeply fulfilling experience that challenged and inspired me in many ways.
What advice would you give to aspiring directors looking to break into the industry?
My advice to aspiring directors is to believe in your vision and stay persistent. The journey can be tough, but each challenge is an opportunity to learn and grow. Surround yourself with a supportive team, and don't be afraid to take creative risks. Keep working hard and stay dedicated to your craft.
How did you approach working with actors to bring out the performances you wanted for the project?
For "Who is God?", we took a unique approach by not requiring traditional actors. Instead, we relied on the capabilities of artificial intelligence to bring our vision to life. This allowed us to focus on the conceptual and visual elements of the film, ensuring that every detail aligned with our creative goals. The use of AI provided a fresh and innovative way to convey emotions and narratives, showcasing the potential of technology in filmmaking. This approach was integral to the project's success and allowed us to explore new frontiers in storytelling.
How did you approach sound design and music for the project, and what was your collaboration like with your composer or sound designer?
We approached sound design and music with a focus on creating a seamless integration between the visual and auditory elements. We selected the song "All My Life" by ODESZA, whose rhythm and mood perfectly matched the themes of our film. We carefully synchronized the scenes to the music, ensuring that each moment resonated with the song's emotional beats. This collaboration with ODESZA's work was essential in enhancing the overall impact of the film, and we're grateful for the opportunity to incorporate their music into our project.
How did you handle feedback or criticism from your team or audience, and what changes did you make as a result?
Handling feedback and criticism is an essential part of the creative process. I approached it with an open mind and a focus on improvement. From my team, I valued constructive feedback that helped refine our vision and enhance the project. Their insights were crucial in making adjustments that strengthened the film. From the audience, I paid close attention to reactions and comments, using them to gauge the effectiveness of our storytelling. Constructive criticism led to some tweaks and adjustments, ensuring that the final product resonated well. This collaborative and receptive approach contributed to the film's success and its selection by numerous film festivals worldwide.
